Five Months

It’s been five months since that stupid, stupid girl failed to yield the right of way, turning right in front of my brother on his motorcycle.  I was playing softball with my Texas Exes team in Austin that night…  I didn’t have a proper conversation with him.

When I went to pick up Chris’s property at San Antonio’s University Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, there was a brand-new, never-used Starbucks card in his wallet.

There was a big blue “Wilson” bag with his softball gear, sitting smack in the middle of the living room floor when we unlocked his apartment late that night.  Chris had indeed come back from the batting cages, thrown the softball gear down, grabbed the laptop bag and his helmet, and headed out to the coffee shop on his Sportster.

None of us knows what the next minute will bring and no one ever leaves the house expecting to get in an accident that maims or kills us.

Your words make me realize how important it is to let my family and friends know how important they are to me and to let them know how much they are loved.

I’ll never forget seeing that post you put on Facebook saying Chris was in ICU and you were heading to the hospital. Feeling utterly helpless as I waited to hear an update from you or your folks. I keep Chris, you and your folks in my prayers daily. I love you guys.

    So true, Bert.

That last weekend with Chris is just seared into my memory, still feels like it was yesterday. Really.

I remember giving him a hug on Sunday around 4:30pm, had all my moto gear on in front of his garage. The awkward hug-with-a-helmet-and-moto-jacket-on style of hug. I had a softball game in Austin on Sunday night, too, so I basically confirmed with Chris that I was OK and rushed out the door to the game (I was late for the game, took the scenic route back to Austin from San Antonio).

Still end up crying at various points throughout the day when I’m down at the hospital, just comes and goes.

Hello, my name is Vicki and I just wanted to tell you that I understand what you are going thru. My son, Justin, was hit by a train on Dec. 19th, 2010. He was not in a car or truck, the train hit him. He is also suffering from TBI along with other injuries. We are trying to get him into Healthsouth Rehab Hospital here in San Antonio. They are waiting for a spot to open and we are also waiting for his insurance to kick in. It becomes effective Feb. 1, 2011. They are telling me that they will pay for his rehab and medicines even though the accident happened before he was covered. Waiting for the 1st to come around so I can see if they stick to their word.

I have my son home with me as of last friday. He was flown to BAMC where he stayed for over a month. He has been very lucky considering the type of accident he had. He is able to talk alittle because his mouth is wired shut and he is wearing a neck brace. The front part of his left foot has been cut off and his C1 and C2 and ligaments attached to his spinal cord were almost cut off. His guardian angles were watching over him and thanks to God and his Doctors at BAMC, he is alive and doing well, considering.

I can give you the information for the Healthsouth Rehab if you would like to check it out. I have numbers of the two nurses that are helping me get my son in facility. They have a charity program that if the patient qualifies, the they do not have to pay for anything. I have heard some wonderful things about this hospital. Several of the nurses have used them and they also treated the singer, Emilio Narvarez there after his bus accident in Houston. I can also give you the name of the insurance company I got for Justin.

I have filed for Social Security disability for him as well as SSI. Praying to get medicare or medicaid to help out with his medical bills.

If there is anything that I can do to help you get Chris the help he needs, please let me know, as I feel we are both in the same boat. Please feel free to contact me by email if you like… txbossybritches@yahoo.com. I will keep Chris and the rest of your family in my prayers. We wish him all the best.

    Vicki, Justin and Family
