{"id":943,"date":"2012-11-12T23:09:04","date_gmt":"2012-11-13T05:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/?p=943"},"modified":"2012-11-12T23:18:45","modified_gmt":"2012-11-13T05:18:45","slug":"end-chapter-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/12\/end-chapter-7\/","title":{"rendered":"End ~ Chapter 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121031-IMG_20121031_103718.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-946\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"20121031-IMG_20121031_103718\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121031-IMG_20121031_103718.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121031-IMG_20121031_103718.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121031-IMG_20121031_103718-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Chapter 7 came to a close on Wednesday, October 31st, as Chris left TIRR Memorial Hermann for home.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m amazed with the progress Chris made in roughly six short weeks at TIRR. \u00a0He&#8217;s able to more readily track objects, movement and people. \u00a0It seems like it&#8217;s easier for him to turn his head to the right, to look past midline with his eye, and he&#8217;s even starting to look up and down with his eye on command (outside of the horizontal plane).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121025-20121025_095112.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-958\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"20121025-20121025_095112\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121025-20121025_095112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121025-20121025_095112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121025-20121025_095112-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>TIRR even had Chris&#8217;s vision checked with a brain-injury specific eye exam (finally!!!). \u00a0In fact, this is what gave me hope about the TIRR during the admissions evaluations: \u00a0they\u00a0<em>recommended<\/em>\u00a0this eye exam without even being asked. \u00a0Wow.<\/p>\n<p>Chris is blind in his right eye. \u00a0I&#8217;m still waiting to hear the complete results from my folks, but it&#8217;s absolutely outstanding to have been at a facility that did common sense testing like this as a matter-of-course. \u00a0Every other facility shrugged it off, leaving therapists and family to continually\u00a0<em>guess<\/em> at the amount of vision remaining in Chris&#8217;s right eye, and whether Chris&#8217;s brain is reacting to visual stimulation properly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2848.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-979\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"20121029-IMG_2848\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2848.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2848.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2848-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Baclofen pump has definitely reduced the muscle tone in Chris&#8217;s lower extremities. \u00a0I can imagine it&#8217;s a relief for him &#8211; having your muscles in a state of constant &#8216;activation&#8217; could be nothing but <em>excruciatingly<\/em> painful. \u00a0Certainly guessing here, but it might make it easier for someone with a TBI to <em>focus<\/em>, without having that constant muscle tone fighting you, interfering, disturbing your intentions. \u00a0Chris is on &#8220;pump precautions&#8221; for another couple of weeks, limiting mobility slightly (no twisting of the torso, leaning forward past 90 degrees, or resting on his right side, where the actual pump unit is implanted).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2853.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1003\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"20121029-IMG_2853\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2853.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2853.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121029-IMG_2853-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>The therapists at TIRR are exceptional (did I mention <em>music therapy<\/em>?!?). \u00a0I think we came away with a lot of new ideas going forward &#8211; for me, using the laptop and music as a way to encourage Chris to start making distinct and repeatable\u00a0<em>choices<\/em> (instead of me just foisting videos and music on him). \u00a0We also have some new muscle exercises to try, and maybe we&#8217;ll try sitting Chris in a normal chair if we can figure out way to get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121030-IMG_28691.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-990\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"20121030-IMG_2869\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121030-IMG_28691.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121030-IMG_28691.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/20121030-IMG_28691-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>him into the thing safely (the patient lifts at TIRR are a bit more maneuverable than your average kit). \u00a0There are also some nifty proximity switches we might be able to use to start getting Chris to move his head left and right to activate things, and perhaps eventually start making choices with a button or switch mounted to headrest on his chair.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, a pretty damn amazing experience, across the board. \u00a0I can&#8217;t say how great the people are at TIRR. \u00a0The progress may seem small to an outside observer, but to me, it&#8217;s finally a discernible leap forward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We definitely gotta get Chris back to Houston after the Baclofen pump precautions expire&#8230;
