{"id":504,"date":"2011-05-22T23:29:17","date_gmt":"2011-05-23T04:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/?p=504"},"modified":"2011-05-22T23:32:39","modified_gmt":"2011-05-23T04:32:39","slug":"one-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/2011\/05\/22\/one-year\/","title":{"rendered":"One Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a year since I spent that <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-525\" title=\"20110522094243\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/20110522094243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>last <em>normal<\/em> weekend with my little brother.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago this Sunday, we went running on the scenic Leon Creek Greenway, followed by the usual breakfast at the Jim&#8217;s restaurant on I-410.\u00a0 A few more cups of coffee at nearby Olmos Perk.\u00a0 Chris suggested making a trip over to the University Co-Op &#8211; he&#8217;d just been reading the 2010 Texas football schedule, and decided it was time to pick up a decent Texas Exes t-shirt!\u00a0 I purchased a tacky Longhorn &#8216;Texas Outline&#8217; decal for my motorcycle top case.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-527\" title=\"20110522111906\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/201105221119061.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>We went to Barnes &amp; Noble after that to drink even more coffee and read some motorcycle magazines.\u00a0 It was a very enjoyable and relaxing weekend, as always.\u00a0 I <em>always<\/em> looked forward to hanging out with Chris!<\/p>\n<p>We had no idea what was going to happen the next evening, just no idea.<\/p>\n<p>I had all my motorcycle gear on &#8211; helmet, jacket, gloves, the full kit &#8211; when I got that last hug from Chris before departing back to Austin for my 6:30pm softball game.\u00a0 Chris showed me a new route back to Austin, via Old Blanco Road (avoiding the rabid cagers on US-281 just north of San Antonio).\u00a0 It was a great ride home.\u00a0 I wish I&#8217;d have given him a hug <em>first<\/em> before I&#8217;d put all the damn motorcycle gear on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-537\" title=\"20110522115901\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/20110522115901.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-529\" title=\"20110522121819\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrisgiles.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/20110522121819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The entire weekend is etched into my mind, and I relive moments of it daily.\u00a0 This is very strange, but it always feels like the accident was last week.\u00a0 <em>Every week,<\/em> it feels like the accident was last week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We were all set to have a family Memorial Day weekend in San Antonio at Chris&#8217;s apartment.\u00a0 That never happened.<\/p>\n<p>I drove around San Antonio today reliving the last Sunday I spent with Chris.\u00a0 I even ordered his oatmeal and fruit combo at Jim&#8217;s (asking the waitress to &#8220;just bear with me on this&#8221;).\u00a0 Argh, it still doesn&#8217;t seem real.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, my dad is set to have surgery to halt the degradation of his spine tomorrow (Monday) at Methodist Hospital here in San Antonio.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll post another update with how that&#8217;s going (we need him back on the team for sure!).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a year since I spent that last normal weekend with my little brother.
